Description:

The Goldwater Environmental Laboratory (GEL) is a shared-use facility available to all research staff, faculty, and students of all disciplines. Managed by Tom Colella, the facility encompasses seven laboratories and is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Research Technical Services group. The facility is operated by a team of ASU personnel committed to providing the tools necessary to meet the analytical needs of researchers while creating a valuable educational experience for users. Though most users prefer to receive individualized hands-on training, enabling them to perform their own analyses, complete analytical services are also available.

Agilent 7890 Automated Gas Analyzer

Thumb This gas chromatography (GC) analyzer is set up to quantify three common greenhouse gases (GHGs) simultaneously.The analysis of air and headspace gas content is useful for environmental monitoring, soil gas flux, catalysis research, closed chamber respiration studies, and beyond. The flame ionization detector (FID) signals for methane (CH₄) and the micro-cell electron capture detector (µ-ECD) will detect nitrous oxide (N₂O) content. A 3rd Li-820 detector for carbon dioxide (CO₂) directly measures CO₂. Automated injections allows for swift and simultaneous analysis. Other analytes such as sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) may also be analyzed. Please enquire for more information.

Ball Mill - Spex-Certiprep 8000D

Thumb Up to 14 samples can be processed simultaneously with dual rotars. Stainless steel vials and balls are available for grinding rocks, sediments, and other hard materials that resist standard teqhniques.

BET Surface Area and Porosity Analysis - Tristar II 3020

Thumb The Tristar II 3020 provides high-quality surface area and porosity measurements on solid materials by using the technique of gas adsorption. The TriStar II is a fully automated, three-station analyzer capable of increasing the speed and efficiency of quality control analyses, with the accuracy, resolution, and data reduction to meet most research needs. Carbon Isotope Analyzer - Picarro

Thumb The PICARRO G2201-i CRDS Analyzer is capable of simultaneous measurement of carbon isotopes from both CO2 and CH4. The G2201-i operates in one of three modes: CO2-only mode, CH4-only mode, and combined CO2/CH4 mode. The Small Sample Isotope Module 2 (SSIM2) expands the measurements that can be made with the Picarro δ13C analyzers for CO2 and CH4. This allows user to: 1. Run gas samples as small as 20 ml at ambient CO2 or CH4 concentrations, 2. Measure microliter volumes of high-concentration samples with built-in dilution capability. 3.Inject samples by syringe

Centrifuge (Allegra X-14 Benchtop)

Thumb Centrifuge has both swinging bucket rotor (max. 4300 rpm) and fixed angle rotor (max. 10,200 rpm) capabilities. Rotors have adaptors for both 15 ml and 50 ml conical vials. Centrifuge has capability for both timed or user programed options.

CHN Elemental Analysis - PE2400

Thumb The PE 2400 is a conventional elemental analyzer. It operates by flash combustion of the specimen encapsulated in tin cups or disks whereby the specimen is completely combusted at a temperature of 1760 C. The resulting gases are chemically scrubbed of the halogens (and of sulfur in the CHN mode) and are separated in a GC column. Detection is conducted by a thermal conductivity detector (TCD). Total C, H, and N are calculated with a precision of 0.1g. Element ratios are more significant since they minimize instrument error. Molar element ratios may be reliably reported for up to three decimal places.

Cutting Mill - Wiley

Useful for cutting/grinding fibrous materials such as plant stems, leaves, and roots that do not lend themselves well to ball-mill grinding. Assorted mesh sizes are available to control particle size.

Discrete Analyzer - Seal AQ2

Thumb The AQ2 system is a flexible automated analyzer that uses the principle of Discrete Analysis where each test occurs in a separate or discrete reaction vessel. The AQ2 is ideal for measuring dissolved nutrients and other constituents in aqueous samples, extracts, and digestions. It is most useful when many and varied tests are needed on different samples and/or individual results are needed immediately. The sample and reagents are incubated in the reaction wells for a pre-programmed time. A single aliquot is then transferred into a 10mm 100% optical glass cuvette. The absorbance is read on the stationary reactant to ensure the best possible signal to noise ratio. Methods: Alkalinity Ammonia Chloride Cyanides Nitrate/Nitrite Nitrite Nitrogen, Total (Persulfate) Phenolics Phosphate, Ortho Phosphorus, Total (Persulfate) Silicate Sulfate

Flow Injection Analysis - Lachat QC8000

Thumb The QC 8000 determines analyte concentrations using colorimetry to detect changes in color produced by the presence of analytes. It is typically used for automated testing of water, waste water and sea water. It is capable of measuring a wide range of analytes, given the appropriate manifold configuration and filter. Currently we are able to measure: Ammonia, Chloride, Nitrate, Nitrite, Total Nitrogen (using an in-line digestion), Orthophosphate, Total Phosphorus (using an in-line digestion), and Alkalinity (methyl orange as a function of CaCO3). It can be expanded to measure dozens of other analytes as well. The instrument is equipped with a 360 position autosampler for multiple sample analysis and an autodilutor for dilution of off-scale samples. It is capable of processing a combination of two analytes simultaneously.

Furnace Atomic Absorbance Spectrometry - Varian 400

Thumb With this instrument, user can expect detection limits lower than can be achieved by either flame AA or ICP (usually sub-ppb, but element specific) without the high cost associated with ICP-MS. In addition to making multiple sample analysis less burdensome, the attached auto sampler aids in increasing precision, adding any modifiers necessary, and may be used to generate/regenerate and check standard curves. The instrument is equipped with Zeeman background correction capabilities.

Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry - HP Quadrupole

Thumb Comprised of an HP 5890 GC interfaced to a HP 5972 Mass Selective Detector Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer, the system uses electron impact (EI) ionization to produce mass fragmentation and is capable of performing full mass scans or selective ion monitoring (SIM) of one or more specific masses. The system is equipped with one split/splitless capillary injection port which will accommodate liquid, headspace, or SPME injections.

Gas Chromatography / MS/MS - Varian Ion Trap

Thumb The Saturn is used for both qualitative (identification/confirmation) and quantitative determinations of trace levels of organic compounds and is capable of both electron ionization (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) using liquid reagents in either MS or MS/MS modes. Selective Ion Storage (SIS) can be used to isolate one or more specific ions in the presence of a much higher background. MS/MS (tandem MS) enables selective storage and subsequent fragmentation of a precursor ion and can be used to further eliminate background and/or to differentiate analytes with very similar GCMS spectra. The NIST 2003 library is available for spectral searches.

ICP Optical Emission Spectrometer - Themo iCAP6300

Thumb The iCAP is capable of rapid, simultaneous measurement of up to 70 elements in aqueous and organic solutions and is equipped with an autosampler with a 240 sample capacity. The dual view design offers the flexibility of axial view for lowest detection limits and radial view for reduced interference; ideal for complex samples often encountered in environmental research. Full frame imaging produces a picture of a sample and can be a useful qualitative tool in determining sample composition. Detection limits vary by element but are typically in the low to sub-ppb (ug/L) level.

Ion Chromatography - Dionex ICS 2000

Thumb The ICS 2000 instrument is configured as a 2 mm system for high-sensitivity (sub-ppb) analysis. It is equipped with a potassium hydroxide eluent generator capable of gradient or stepped analysis and a column heater. These features offer improved peak resolution and sensitivity compared to the ICS 1000 system. Sample filtration via a 0.45 micron pore size filter (or smaller) is required.

Ion Chromatography - Dionex ICS1000

Thumb This IC system determines analyte concentrations using chromatography columns and a pulsed electrochemical conductivity detector. It is typically used for automated testing of aqueous solutions. It is capable of measuring a wide variety of ions, given the appropriate eluant and analytical column. Currently, we are able to measure the major anions: Fluoride, Chloride, Bromide, Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, and Sulfate as well as numerous other anions using an AS23 column. It can be reconfigured to analyze cations if required. The autosampler will accommodate up to 66 vials of 5 mL size, 88 vials of 0.5 mL size, or a combination of the two sizes.

LECO Pegasus GCxGC TOFMS

Thumb Comprehensive two-dimensional chromatography (GCxGC) and a time-of-flight spectrometer (TOFMS) offers powerful detection in complex molecular mixtures. On-column cryofocusing of sample assists in detecting even very low volatility analytes. Orthogonal column phases paired with thermal modulation improves selectivity while dramatically raising signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) compared to one dimensional GC analysis. Utilizes Gerstel robotic sampling arm. SPME and Twister applications available. Please enquire for more information.

Thumb Capble of measuring to the microgram range. Typically used in the milligram and sub-milligram range. Two balances available for scheduling.

Microwave Digestion System

Thumb This system can be used to digest or extract a wide variety of solid and liquid materials. Common applications include soils, minerals and rocks, sediments, sludges, plant and animal tissues, water, dairy. Commonly used to prepare samples for metals and nutrient (total N, P, S) analysis. Will accomodate 40 samples of 10-20 mL volume (including digestion reagents). See CEM link for methods and application support.

Muffle Furnace - Fisher Isotemp 550

Thumb Capable of ambient to 1250 degrees C.

Sample Concentrator (Techne DB-3A)

Thumb Up to 24 samples can be concentrated with the use of temperatures up to 200˚C as well as an inert gas (or simply air). This instrument greatly accelerates the drying process and streamlines the scientific process.

Total Organic Carbon / Nitrogen Analysis - Shimadzu TOC-V

Thumb The Shimadzu TOC-VC/TN analyzes liquid samples for total carbon (TC), inorganic carbon (IC), total organic carbon (TOC), and non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC). The TN unit allows for simultaneous TOC and Total Nitrogen (TN) analysis. A known amount of sample is introduced into the instrument and is either combusted (TC, TOC, NPOC) or acidified and purged (IC). Carbon content is measured as CO2 by non-dispersive infrared gas analysis. The TOC-VC combustion analyzer has a measuring range of 1mg C/L to 25,000mg C/L with reproducibility of 1.5% CV. It has a wide range of applications from ultra pure water to highly contaminated water. It is capable of multiple standard level and multiple constituent analyses in a single automated run.
